Restructuring Marxism

‘Democracy is the road to Socialism,’ said the great thinker of the 20th century, Karl Marx. Why did Karl Marx say this? Why did he bridge Democracy with Leftism?

The answer is that these words of his are attributed towards the panaceas for undemocratic authoritarian states. The bridge between these two theories form an important reference towards the analysis of political failures which came after Marxism was established.

Several interrogatives have come into existence due to evolutionary distortion of world movements, particularly authoritarian communism - the justifications for one party dictatorial societies; regimes having contempt for human rights, who encouraged zealous militarism, subjugation of intellectuals, who unjustly controlled public opinion through propaganda and ordained elite power. Does it also tell us that a modern state propagates neo- fascism? Were the theories of Marxism wrongly implemented or is there a flaw in the theory of Marxism itself?

Anarchism has also induced stronger reasons for the restructuring of Marxism. Until a state doesn’t justify its power, it has no right to institutionalize itself, is the argument which has been conceptualized by non- state socialists on the failure of undemocratic state socialism . The theory of Anarcho Syndicalism or Libertarian Socialism, imply that the states are centers of absolute power, and argue that power is a synonym of violence and subjugation. They rest on the principles of decentralized self management of laborers, economic mutualism, propagate book industry, view wage slavery as an attack on human conscience and propagate abolition of the state. Ever since the 19th century, when the role of states grew inequitably stronger, the argument for the abolition of governments also grew firm by non-state socialists.

Modern scholars of State Marxism have also argued that socialism should seek to establish a control over the wealth, politics, and law of a land, through the creation of a state as a primal entity, but only through committing to a democratic character, that would ensure proper rights of decision binding for its people. Like online voting would be the qucikest and a reliable way of deciding ordinances. If we speak about the role of state, its emancipation is vital towards welfare and reform. It should aim towards the freedom of the working class, their role in attaining ‘economic democracy’ over distribution of commodities, towards attaining aspirations, in collective management of production, and in control over matters of legal and social philosophies that concern people - the creation of worker’s power. Neo Marxism – Democratic Socialism. And not a dogmatic totalitarianism.

John Dewey, a prominent 20th century American social philosopher, argued that any industry needs to be changed "from a feudalistic to a democratic social order" based on workers' control and free association - the cradle of socialism. Until that happens, he believed, unjust politics will remain and will cause "the shadow of unscrupulous big businessess to disdain the integrity of workers.”

Our vision of the economic world should be a place where there are no profits for few, where there are public owned – worker corporatives, where decisions are made by workers for their own good. We can’t abolish private corporations. Rather, we can bring the employees into a greater democratic control in opinion considerations, manufacture regulations like minimum wages act, right to strike, and regulations which allow corporations to ensure a social responsibility in business, and a statute where corporations can be easily nationalized, whenever necessary.

Restructuring Marxism is a modern phenomenon and is still in its infancy. Although, Marxism has again grown in prominence because world is again under a laissez faire financial debacle. We can learn from the intelligent reforms and management system of modern labour communes like the International Worker’s Association.

A comprehensive Swedish economic model has been under reasoned debate lately. The National Health Care of United Kingdom and Canada, Nicaragua’s education reforms have time and again stressed on the worker community intervention in decision making, which shadow ignorance and signify a seemingly harmonious and an economically-liberated society. A world which is not controlled by bankers and bosses.
